The Regal Jumping Spider (Phidippus regius) has quickly become one of the most beloved invertebrates in the pet hobby. Renowned for their oversized eyes, striking intelligence, and inquisitive behaviour, these spiders are exceptionally interactive. Because of their small size, they require minimal space and make the perfect low-maintenance, engaging pet for both beginner and experienced keepers alike.

- Adult Size: Up to 2 cm body length (with a leg span reaching up to 3 cm)
- Temperature: 24–28°C (While they can tolerate room temperature, supplemental heat keeps them active and encourages an optimal appetite)
- Humidity: 65–75% (High humidity is vital for safe molting, but excellent cross-ventilation must be maintained to prevent stagnant air)

Key Features & Behaviour
- Visual, Diurnal Hunters: Unlike web-weaving arachnids, jumping spiders rely on their incredible, binocular-like vision to actively hunt down food. They are completely diurnal (active during the day) and require clear, bright lighting conditions to track their prey.
- Fearless Pouncers: They possess an exceptional appetite and will fearlessly stalk and pounce on insects up to 1.5 times their own body size.
- Interactive Companions: Known for their distinct personality traits, these spiders are naturally curious and will frequently track human movement outside their enclosure walls.
Enclosure Requirements
- Front or Bottom-Opening Setup: Avoid top-opening enclosures. Jumping spiders instinctively build their thick silk sleeping hammocks at the absolute highest point of their environment. Opening a top lid will tear their webs and severely stress the animal.
- Cross-Ventilation: Adequate airflow is mandatory. Choose a vertical enclosure featuring ample mesh panels or side-drilled ventilation holes.
- Hydration Over Water Bowls: Never use an open water dish, as jumping spiders can easily drown. Instead, lightly mist one side of the enclosure wall with a fine spray bottle 3–4 times a week so they can safely drink the lingering water droplets.
Feeding Schedule
- Young Instars (Slings): Should be offered wingless fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster or Drosophila hydei) every 1–2 days.
- Juveniles & Adults: Thrive on a diet of green bottle flies, house flies, or small roaches offered 2–3 times per week. Flying insects are highly recommended as they trigger the spider’s natural arboreal hunting instincts.
