Short description of Fruit Fly (Drosophila hydei):
Fruit Fly Drosophila hydei is classic feeder fly for a wide range of animal species, especially for their young stages – mantid nymphs, tarantula spiderlings, amphibian froglets etc. This species is bigger than D. melanogaster, its size is about 3 mm.
This genetic line has well developed wings, but can’t fly what is a huge benefit for keepers and their pets.
Important to remember – optimal temperature for keeping of cultures is 22-23C, but 25-26C can be used if you need to speed up their development. Higher temperature shortens colony lifespan and increase mould growth rate. Development cycle from egg to the moment when first fly will hatch takes about 2 week.
