Description
Short description of Fruit Flies (Drosophila melanogaster):
Fruit fly D. melanogaster is another classic feeder fly species for many exotic species, especially for their young stages – mantid nymphs, tarantula spiderlings, amphibian froglets etc. This species is smaller than D. hydei, its size is about 2 mm.
Wings of this genetic line are not developed, so flies are completely unable to fly.
Important to remember – optimal temperature for keeping of fruit fly cultures are 22-23C, but 25-26C can be used if you need to speed up their development. Higher temperature shortens colony lifespan and increase mould growth rate. Development cycle from egg to the moment when first fly will hatch takes about 1 week.
