Giant African Millipede (Archispirostreptus gigas) is one of the largest millipedes of the world and also one of the most popular pets among keepers. It is very docile and peaceful although it must be handled with some caution to not stress the animal too much – if scared it is curling in a tight spiral and secreting an irritating defensive fluid. Don’t touch your mouth and eyes with fingers after handling them and wash your hands thoroughly.
General care guidelines are the same as for all other species. Enclosure must contain 10-15 cm of substrate consisted from rotten white wood, leaf litter and moss, millipedes will be recycling it slowly. Also they will eat vegs and fruits, but remove all spoiled pieces to prevent mould growth. Especially important is to provide animals with constant access to the source of calcium, it is critical for their growth and overall health. It can be eggs shales or plain chalk.
If you will see that your pet is less active and is spending most of the time underground – do not disturb it as most probably it is preparing for molting.
